Why do we struggle with assurance/confidence?

- God’s holy presence contrasting our remaining sin

• Bad responses:

  • self-condemnation

  • self-righteousness

  • Self-delusion

• Right response:

  • Faith working through love (v. 23)

Love

• what’s it like?

  • Christ’s love: Purposeful, intentional action for others that is costly and undeserved (v. 16)

  • Charity & Compassion

• How do we get it?

  • Eternal life abiding in him (v.15)

Faith

• what’s it like?

  • Orientation on God rather than self (v.20)

• God knows everything

• Answered prayer comes through alignment with faith and love
